INVITATION
DO IT YOUR
WHEY
The
80th Red Hill Agricultural and Horticultural Show will be held at the Red Hill
Showgrounds on Saturday, March 22nd 2008.
The
Show organisers are again collaborating with Jan and Trevor Brandon of Red Hill
Cheese fame to provide a forum for home cheese makers to exhibit their efforts
in friendly competition with others, have their cheese tasted and commented upon
by an acclaimed international cheese judge and maybe win the coveted title of
Champion Non-Commercial Cheese of the Red Hill Show!
Jan
has told us about the amazing quality and range of cheese which is being produced
by home cheese makers, some of whom have attended cheesemaking workshops at Red
Hill Cheese and have gone on to create some sensational cheese in their home kitchens.
We would also like to hear from people who have been making cheese to old family
recipes handed down over generations who would be interested in meeting others
with a similar interest.
The
rules are simple - non-commercial cheese makers must enter at least 100gms of
any style of cheese, which will then be judged by Neil Willman, cheese educator,
consultant and international cheese judge. It doesn't matter what style of cheese
you make, bring it along and the judge will categorize the entries prior to making
his deliberations.
Cheese
must be delivered to the Red Hill Cheese site in the Peninsula Produce Section
of the Showgrounds before 10am on the Saturday of the Show.
The
cheese will be refrigerated before the open judging commences at llam. People
will be able to watch Neil assess the cheese and listen to his comments and helpful
hints and tips on the various styles of cheese as they are judged.
One
of the best success stories of Mornington Peninsula produce is that of Red Hill
Cheese. Jan and Trevor Brandon started making cheese in April 2000. In 2002, their son Burke joined the team as cheesemaker, and they now
employ 8 part-time staff producing 18 styles of cheese from goats' and cows'
milk. One of their most popular is the sublime, award-winning "Misty Valley" brie-style made
from goats' milk. Somehow they manage to keep up with the huge demand for their
cheese without compromising their handmade production values.
The Cheesery 'Cellar Door' Shop at
81 William Road, Red Hill is open Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 12 noon to 5pm. Trevor, an ex-science
teacher, specialises in hand made, full flavoured cheese. Home cheesemaking workshops are
also conducted on a regular basis.
If
you want general information about the Red Hill Show or would like to receive
a Schedule, telephone (03) 5989 2357 or e-mail. We invite your participation
in this exciting event!
